"I realized that the one thing that could heal me was travel"

It sat right below the light on my friend's terrace, the gecko, its gaze fixated on the wasp in front of it.

"Go on then, eat it," my friends shouted. "Show the sucker!"

But it wouldn't, I knew. Sure enough, the wasp buzzed around its rival, eventually sitting on it. The visible reflex reaction vibrating through the gecko's entire body could mean only one thing: A sting.

"Ow!" said Alex. "Bloody wasp."

Three years ago, it had been a different terrace, different geckos, and different wasps. But the act was always the same: The gecko tried and it failed.

Lonely, miserable, and out of luck, I watched. I always watched.
