Swimwear Designers

by Mridu Khullar

It wasn't until they won the Mittelmoda Bali Beachwear Award 2006 in Indonesia that Shrivan Bhatia (25) and Narresh Kukreja (23) realized they excel in swimwear and intimate apparel. Then came a prize for their Bee Hive Bra at the Montana World of Wearable Art in New Zealand, and the title of Debutant Designer of the Year 2007 at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. A partnership was solidified and the groundwork laid for scholarships to study fashion design in Italy.

The biggest challenge on their return, though, was how to convince the Asian woman to think about swimsuit fashion and take it beyond the ill-fitting monotonous wear available en masse. Another problem, the duo found, was that women were not only apprehensive about donning swimsuits (sometimes even giving up swimming after pregnancy left stretch marks and a lower confidence level) but also had very few choices. "They didn't have the right clothes to wear, they weren't confident about their bodies, and they just ended up missing a huge part of their lives by missing getting close to nature," says Narresh.

Th Delhi-based designers, who studied together at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), bring their own strengths and quirks to the table. Narresh has an eye for colors, so Shrivan does the silhouettes and Narresh fills them in. Narresh is also good at handling PR and marketing while Shrivan, who hails from a small town, says he's best with labor.

Last year at the Mare di Moda, Cannes 2008, they launched their beachwear label, Shrivan Narresh, with the first ever 100 per cent stitch-free line called Insectoid for which their inspiration was insects combined with geometry.

Of their inspiration, Narresh says, "At times you just know something is in the air. You can sense where society is moving at large and you just have to be sensitive enough to feel it."
