Why the Prodigals Return

For Indians in the US, India is now the new America
by Mridu Khullar

Once, in order for them to succeed, Indians sent their children abroad - to the lands of opportunity - where they would study, get jobs, earn good money, and hopefully, send some back to their families.

"My son is in America," parents would proudly proclaim to their neighbors, relatives and friends. It meant: "My son is successful."

In less than a decade, that changed.

With America's economy in a tailspin, foreign jobs being diverted to Indian shores and Americans descending on Bangalore in its multitudes of opportunties, the Indian-American dream has lost its promise. In a recent report by the Kauffman Foundation titled, "America's loss is the world's gain," Vivek Wadhwa, a researcher at Duke University, predicts that 100,000 Indians will return home in the next five years. That's quite some number, considering that 50,000 of them had gone back in the previous two decades.

The report surveyed 1,200 Indian and Chinese immigrants to the United States who had worked or studied there and returned to their home country. Most were happy with their decision.

What prompted this reverse brain drain?
