    Hello Mridu,

First of all I want to congratulate you for writing so well!
I am a freelancer writer. Actually I started writing very late in my life (Due to reasons like household responsibilities). I mostly write as ghost writer for many online publications. I see my work is being published by others as their own. It pinches but I do it for earning money.

How can I get work published under my name and also get money for it?

I freelanced when I was working full-time but I’d mentioned this to my boss before-hand and he was okay about it. Of course, the work that I was doing (full-time) and the magazine writing (freelance) were not related in any way, so that probably helped.

Often, when I take up work for companies (technical writing), they ask me if I’m doing (or will be doing) other work. I’ll mention to them that I won’t be working elsewhere but that I may have other writing commitments (for magazines). I think basically companies want to know that you’re not doing work for someone else while getting paid by them. Which is fair.

I’ve also noticed that companies have standard templates for their agreements which may not apply to freelancers. If you ask and insist, you’ll most likely be able to get freelancer-friendly terms.

    Hi,
That certainly clears things up, Mridu. I guess the only option I have then is to quit, look for something part-time and freelance on the side. There aren’t any avenues here, that’s for sure. Technical writing to take care of rent is also an option, since bylines there aren’t really an issue. Thanks a bunch for being so helpful. Will keep you posted on whatever decision I take.

  4. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, Sowmya. Let me know how it goes.
