Let’s start with one of the easiest, and one of the most ignored ways of getting freelance work: Letters of Introduction or LoIs.
LoIs are basically formal letters that say “Hey Editor, I’m writing to introduce myself. This is what I’ve done in the past, this is why I want to write for your publication, this is why I think I’m a perfect fit, and I can’t wait to hear from you with an assignment.”
Letters of Introduction mostly work well with trade publications or those job listings you see on Craigslist or other freelance websites. Create one template, edit according to the publication, and voila. You’re done.
I’ve already talked about LoIs and the success rate I’ve had with them, so you can read about it here.
For today, I want you to pick out ten publications that you want to work with or that you think may be open to working with you, and send them a Letter of Introduction.

Mridu,
I will definitely be checking back for more tips for marketing month - what a great idea! I just went full time freelance, so this will be very helpful. One question, though. How do you balance marketing yourself with actually doing the work? The last few weeks have been a challenge, as I’ve been trying to drum up more business AND finish current assignments. It’s good to be busy, though!
Susan
For today!!!??
Great tips Mridu, as usual
Ok, I’ll try
Sebastian
Susan, I still struggle with that balance, I guess, which is why I need to dedicate a whole month to marketing! But for now, I just do the work on my plate (or procrastinate on it) by fixing small bite-sized deadlines for it (outline by tomorrow, research by day after, actual writing on day 3, revision on day 4, final edit day 5), and dedicate the remainder of the day to marketing. I try to keep it 50-50.
Sebastian, you can do it! I’ve sent out one so far. 9 to go. Here’s something to get you started: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art1489.asp
Wow, I actually did send one of these letters today. Nine more to go for me as well. Great post, Mridu! Thanks for encouraging us.
