15 May 2008 AMOM: Day 10: Ask for Referrals

Writers network with writers. Photographers network with photographers. And editors do network with other editors.

So if there’s an editor you’ve been working with for quite a while, who likes you, trusts you, and comes to you regularly with work, ask her for referrals. Does she work in a company that publishes many magazines? Do they have other newsletters and publications? Does she know any other editors who may need a reliable writer?

You won’t know until you ask. And asking isn’t as hard as it’s made out to be. A simple, “I’m looking to expand my client list, and was wondering if you needed a writer for any of the other publications in your group,” is informal, precise, and can get you immediate work.
