AMOM Day 5: Market Ideas That Never Got Off the Ground
Ideas are usually never a problem for writers. It’s the implementation, the querying, the organizing, the list-making, the researching, and all the other associated stuff that makes it so difficult.
There are likely some queries that you sent out in the beginning of your career that may have seemed like pure genius at the time but never quite sold. So you wrote them off, moved on, and went about your life.
It’s time to revisit.
Look through your sent e-mails folder for pitches that you sent over six months ago that fell through the cracks and never did quite find a home. Bring them out and dust them off.
Since you already have a good distance from them, read them again.
* Are they well-written?
* Is the idea you’re proposing shaped up nicely and cleanly?
* Is there any new research or development on this story? Can you find something to make it timely?
* Can you find a new angle using the idea for this story?
Rewrite the proposal if need be (it might be a good idea to do a bit more research to see what’s the latest on it), and send it out.
Do this for all those queries that can be salvaged. You’ll find quite a few.
