05 May 2008 AMOM Day 2: Letters of Introduction

Let’s start with one of the easiest, and one of the most ignored ways of getting freelance work: Letters of Introduction or LoIs.

LoIs are basically formal letters that say “Hey Editor, I’m writing to introduce myself. This is what I’ve done in the past, this is why I want to write for your publication, this is why I think I’m a perfect fit, and I can’t wait to hear from you with an assignment.”

Letters of Introduction mostly work well with trade publications or those job listings you see on Craigslist or other freelance websites. Create one template, edit according to the publication, and voila. You’re done.

I’ve already talked about LoIs and the success rate I’ve had with them, so you can read about it here.

For today, I want you to pick out ten publications that you want to work with or that you think may be open to working with you, and send them a Letter of Introduction.
