06 Nov 2007 Music or Silence?
 |  Category: Writing  | Tags: , , , , , ,

I can’t write in silence. Silence threatens to overwhelm me, but since words distract me, I listen to a lot of instrumental music when I’m writing. I used to download guitar riffs from unknown musicians, but lately, I’ve found myself drawn to tribal house.

My music has to be instrumental. If there are words, I tend to stop and listen. Unless it’s Hindi music (because I write in English, the words don’t get muddled).

What about you? What do you listen to when you write?

  1. Lately I’ve been alternating between Cannonball Adderly and Frank Sinatra. I usually have the same issue with song vocals, but I’ve been listening to Sinatra so long that it’s like breathing to me now.

  2. All music is NOISE! Nothing much more.

“Silence threatens to overwhelm me”. Why? You should be more concerned about this question than “music or silence?”.

I love music! But only when I am stupid. I love being stupid!

  3. Were you a psychologist in a previous life, Fred? Don’t read too much into it. I have three dozen thoughts running in my head when I sit down to write, and music helps me de-stress and focus.

Btw, music is noise? Stupid people love music? Are you high?

  4. Hehe. Was just talking about my own experience. Not to be taken too seriously. But really, sometimes it’s so nice to switch the music off.

  5. Actually, my music WOULD sound like noise to you. Drums. Many many drums. It’s good for dancing– tribal house– keeps me happy. :)

Some people need to have a television blaring while they write. I can’t do that.

  6. I listen to too many radio talk shows. They are too distracting. I need to cut back. Silence I do quite well in, but I can only take that for so long. I like classical stuff. Sometimes I can even write in front of the tv, but it depends on the show. Lately when I do that though I find myself with my notebook on my lap and still blank 45 minutes later. lol.

  7. I found this nice article on brain synchronization and how it affects writing. I was reminded of this blog entry when the writer mentioned listening to instrumental music.

  8. Great article! Thanks for the link, Dinnie.
